Is This What Got Me Through My Glutening?

You may or may not know, but I was glutened on Friday. First time in over a year. Thing is, this time it has been a totally different experience in getting over it. We're now at Tuesday, a mere five days since it happened and I am relieved and happy to report that I don't appear to have any remaining glutened symptoms.

Yes, Friday, Saturday and Sunday were horrible, same as ever after the evil has been near, but yesterday aside from a slight headache and a little brain fog - which must have subsided pretty darn quick because I wrote seven and a half recipe posts to go out over the coming days - I was fine.

Today I don't have any symptoms at all.

This is astounding. It usually takes me weeks if not months to be in this position after encountering the Voldermort of the food world. Five days in this time and I'm fine! Like, really fine, I feel good!

I don't know if this is coincidence but sometime after the last glutening I introduced coconut water into my diet. I wrote about it in February but had been drinking it since 2011. I wrote about how it made me feel like I was getting a boost when I drank it, that it really perked me up.

Vita Coco
I get through 4 litres of this stuff a week, my body craves it. On Friday when I got glutened I was out of it (in more ways than one!) and only started to drink it again Saturday lunchtime. By Sunday my stomach symptoms had pretty much cleared, albeit some bloating, but there's always a little bloating anyway, and now I'm pain, ache and brain fog clear.

I have never had a glutening episode pass so fast, could it be the Vita Coco? I don't know for sure but it seems like it to me. That's the only thing different to any other time I've been recovering, I never used to drink coconut water, this time I did.

I'd be interested to hear if any other coeliacs drink coconut water.

Here's To Good Health.

  1. Wow. I thought I was the only one. I craved this stuff like crazy when I got glutened the first time after going GF. It helped me as well!

  3. Yup...coconut water (along with yogurt and homemade chicken broth) get my tummy back in order within 24 hours. I wish anything helped the 3-4 days of brain fog and depression- nothing seems to make a difference- but at least I can walk about and function in the world.

Congrats on your quick recovery! I have also found that my recent episodes have resolved more quickly. It seems really working on healing the original gluten damage means that when I do get glutened, maybe my intestines are less leaky and I get less exposure? Or after several months of clean eating, maybe my body's response to the poison is a little less aaaargh-freak-out? Whatever the reasons, I'm grateful-

  4. Thanks, I'm just thanking my lucky stars that I began drinking coconut water, to be honest it wasn't even for health benefits, I just liked the taste. Result!

I can't remember the time frame between my last bad episode and the one before that but it was months. It took me 6-8 weeks to not have any symptoms after that glutening and I'd been eating totally clean during the time in between. We're all so different.

Glad that you've been recovering quicker too.

  5. Thanks really interesting. It could be the high potassium levels, which help you balance your electrolytes more quickly, dehydration is partly the cause of the symptoms you experiencing due to the response your gut has, which is to get everything out fast. Good luck with it, I recommend cocoVita to all my clients, with or without Coeliac Disease due to it's great balance of minerals. I know everyone knows how important it is to stay away from Gluten, but clearly it's not that easy. Here is to gluten free!

  6. Thanks for that, good to know the actual reasons as to why it may help.

  7. Some times those horrible symptoms usually associated with Coeliac Disease can be caused by a fungus/yeast and some times both are present at the same time.

Apart from mineral/electrolyte re-balancing as described above, coconut also contains other nutrients that might also be responsible for the relief people can experience when taking coconut water or maybe even coconut milk.

Two of those nutrients are lauric acid and caprylic Acid. They exhibit antiviral, antimicrobial, antiprotozoal and antifungal properties and are commonly used in the treatment of Candida Albicans.

    Hope that helps
