A Natural Alternative To Lemsip

honey and lemon cold remedy
Cold Fighter
As written about in a previous post, Lemsip's are gluten free (except for the Lemsip All In One Wild Berry and Hot Orange) but they don't agree with me. I've used natural remedies for years because as a child I was constantly on some form of medication even though I didn't have a long term illness. I just used to get everything going and I put that down to the fact that I had no immune system due to all the drugs I was given unnecessarily.

I'm not going to tempt fate but as an adult, aside from the need to be gluten free, yeah. I like natural remedies.

This works great as a lovely warming drink and an alternative to Lemsip, but it's also delicious left to cool and then put in the fridge. Cold it reminds me of a Firefly flavour but that also has lime in it. No reason why you couldn't put lime in this I just never thought to.

Ingredients Per Mug Serving:

Half of an Unwaxed Small Lemon
Square Inch of Fresh Ginger
Tablespoon of Manuka Honey
Boiled Water

Peel the ginger and cut if desired, slice the lemon if preferred.

Just mix until the honey dissolves and leave for a few minutes so the flavours infuse.

If making to drink cold increase the quantities so you can have a jug or bottle of it in the fridge.

If nothing else it's a warming or refreshing drink that tastes lovely. I personally feel a bit of a boost when I drink this warm and there's plenty of info out there about the benefits of fresh lemon, ginger and Manuka honey but hey, I'm not here to preach. I am still cold free however, despite sharing a home with someone who's had it all week (and been taking Lemsip!) and I believe that without drinking this I probably wouldn't be.

Now for chocolate.

The fondue can't come soon enough!

Have a fun filled weekend.

  1. Hi, I love this and will try it at home later - thanks. Just to note, I would pour boiling water over organic lemon & ginger and leave to just cool enough to drink - then add the Manuka - otherwise you are killing the good benefits from Manuka honey and only getting the nice honey taste.
Take care of yourself & thanks again :)
