I got around it by learning a lot about gluten free food and becoming a pretty decent cook, making everything from scratch. But of course that took time and effort and there were no short cuts. Convenience was a thing of the past for many, many years.</p><p>There's been some lovely supermarket items appear over time but nothing quite prepared me for when I started shopping at Ocado and discovered Marks and Spencer's Made Without range.</p><p><br></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0MqOlaYG2de_cOmOsdOUb16A9lCoZ5EqLP16TaRJjZ34kYu6aV6GzE_o53UWL95XdcT3EbMHgQkJRFmV8Mh6ckwKlha7Zl0-c-zx2nnRx0wz-ux8VYzdPU1fODQKBX6hhsonlfBKNq6K0OPh_VHB7P_9qx1uTUgI8ySCMUAN2EFuWkKCkVJSItK34/s2744/Marks-and-spencer-gluten-free-quiche.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="marks and spencer gluten free" border="0" data-original-height="1800" data-original-width="2744" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0MqOlaYG2de_cOmOsdOUb16A9lCoZ5EqLP16TaRJjZ34kYu6aV6GzE_o53UWL95XdcT3EbMHgQkJRFmV8Mh6ckwKlha7Zl0-c-zx2nnRx0wz-ux8VYzdPU1fODQKBX6hhsonlfBKNq6K0OPh_VHB7P_9qx1uTUgI8ySCMUAN2EFuWkKCkVJSItK34/w400-h263/Marks-and-spencer-gluten-free-quiche.jpg" width="400"></a></div><br><span><br></span><a href="http://www.freefromg.com/2022/10/marks-and-spencers-made-without-gluten.html#more">Click here to read more...</a>Lee Alexanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03935889919884460455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5273125373282229599.post-62042080686756313162018-06-12T17:01:00.001+01:002018-06-12T17:01:54.774+01:00Quick and Easy - Gluten Free Tagliatelli Carbonara<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

If you put the pasta water on the hob to boil before you do anything else, this should be a 20 minute or less meal. Or you could of course boil a kettle if you have one and speed things up further.</div>

By keep you posted I <i>meant</i> in 6 months time I'll come and ramble at you about something or other! I truly didn't, time just seems to be going faster than ever before, <i>how</i> is is June already?!<br>

Pork Scratchings update: TG got them out from behind the drawer around March I think. Still good he ate them. And the stocking stuffers were a surprise, hooray!<br>

I really have been intending to post here on a regular basis but other than sharing new gluten free finds there's not much to say on the coeliac front. I feel good, I mean we get little sleep because the Kittens who turned 1 last month either keep us awake by competing for the fastest lap around the apartment or they partake in regular 'singing' contests where they sound like they've been mic'd up. All in the wee hours. But, y'know, it's not like I don't have sleep issues anyway so it's worse for TG. They definitely provide loads of laughs though. So yeah, all good.<br>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJpYZr1mcyfETfS6MKIZqbLwd1YU-Becrs5rTXmLcOVSZlnW2OTpXBzedD_codBqBvhkoDAfC85ouf7VJQIcM4sImKNRmA7RnXbioUc1gJRjJ3-aPU5YmUjTTg9GXB7QlmOdx7QTsZm6E/s1600/beer+hawk+box.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="beer hawk gluten free mixed case" border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJpYZr1mcyfETfS6MKIZqbLwd1YU-Becrs5rTXmLcOVSZlnW2OTpXBzedD_codBqBvhkoDAfC85ouf7VJQIcM4sImKNRmA7RnXbioUc1gJRjJ3-aPU5YmUjTTg9GXB7QlmOdx7QTsZm6E/s400/beer+hawk+box.jpg" title="" width="400"></a></div>
<br>
So I bought TG a box of gluten free beer for the holidays and just like the <a href="http://www.freefromg.com/2017/12/the-kittens-play-boom-blast-stix.html">Boom Blast Stixs</a>, it's already been given (I know, I'm so rubbish at holding back pressies). He's been drinking GF beer for ages now but on the last shop forgot to get any so was running low.<br>
<br>
In my quest for decent presents for him I've been trawling every quirky site I've ever visited (there's a lot) and just exhausted all the viable sites that come up in search. So remembering how he was a fan of gluten free beer I thought I'd see what they had on Amazon.<br>
<br>
To cut a long story short, I got him this <a href="http://amzn.to/2AxPB5D">mixed case</a>. I thought it was quite a nice gift; craft beers selected by experts, bit fancy. Plus I knew that he would never expect me to buy him beer. Would be a nice surprise.<br>

Omg, so much fun! Seriously, this game is ridiculously entertaining and you'd have to be a huge misery guts not to raise a smile at it. Unless you're terribly jumpy in which case you probably shouldn't go anywhere near it.<br>
<br>
Last week I happened to watch a show about what toys were worth buying for Christmas and Boom Blast Stix was one of them. Although I do love a <strike>bit</strike> lot of silly fun I actually bought this for the kittens as I knew they would love it. I had no idea how many laughs this simple little game would provide.<br>
<br>
Though obviously not intended as a cat toy, when those stix go boom blast - which they do, often! - the little guys are enthralled. I think there's a slim chance that I may even manage to teach Rolf fetch. Waffle, no chance! Have I mentioned what a little kleptomaniac he is?<br>

But I've just read something that makes me so mad that as I can't sleep anyway, I'm going to address. It's like going back to warrior FFG mode. Back. In. The. Day.<br>
<br>
I'm a sidebar of shame glancer, I know that I'm meant to feel ashamed about being so but I don't. Time wasting skimming over what people in the public eye are up to, it blurs worrying about real life at times.<br>
<br>
I just saw something that really shocked me. And I would like to point out that as it's from the <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5157661/Raymond-Blancs-roasts-diners-fashionable-food-allergies.html">Daily Mail</a>, I don't know if it's true, but it's being reported and it affects me and so many people who read FFG that I really feel like I have to say something.<br>

<br>
I can honestly say that I never thought there would come a time when gluten free bread could possibly be this good. Tesco have well and truly nailed it, <a href="http://www.freefromg.com/2017/08/gluten-free-fast-food-indulgence.html">again</a>.<br>
<br>
If you're new to the gluten free diet through necessity, it might not seem like it right now because things are confusing and scary but honestly, trust me when I say that you'll never have to worry about starving like I did when I first went gluten free.<br>
<br>
This bread is a prime example of how you can eat something shop bought gluten free and incredibly lovely. It's not a case of 'oh man I'm SO hungry I better try and eat a slice of cardboard again, just to fill my sore tummy'. Wasn't quite a Bushtucker Trial but it wasn't very pleasant, not around the time I started this blog. I dread to think what it was like all those years previous.<br>

So it's all been a bit chaotic. Our Beko fridge freezer died again, second time in about a year. When you consider that I bought it when we moved into this apartment and that was late Summer 2012, can't say it was a great buy.<br>
<br>
It seemed pointless having it mended again (pretty sure it was the same problem) so we bought a new one. The thing is, we don't have a kitchen space that allows for a washing machine so measurements are pretty important when it comes to a fridge freezer.<br>
<br>
(When I look back at at the stuff I've accomplished in that kitchen it amazes me these days. I think there are toy versions with more workspace and oven reliability. Not a moan however, just a 'picture this' kind of comment.)<br>

Just discovered this by accident. Knew that I started FFG in October but I had no idea that today was actually the day. Was checking stats because I'm edging really close to 1 million pageviews (!) and made the discovery.<br />
<br />
Was previously thinking it might be cool to put something fun together for an upcoming birthday post to amuse myself. Bit late now!<br />
<br />
Anyway, Happy Birthday Free From G! How time has flown.<br />

When I first started Free From G I was on a mission. I'd had all convenience taken away when it came to food so I figured that I'd teach myself to be the best gluten free cook I could be and serve up meals that were worthy of all the faffing about and mess.<div>
<br></div>
<div>
I did that day in day out for so many years. Take a look at the <a href="http://www.freefromg.com/p/recipe-index.html">recipe page</a> for yummy examples, pretty much all from scratch.</div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
So what an absolute pleasure it is these days to have convenience back! I'd love to focus on some more accessible recipes, really easy stuff that doesn't require a ton of ingredients or effort but still tastes loverly.</div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
If you make this, you're in for a bit of a treat. I honestly haven't stopped wanting to eat this every meal since we had it on Monday. </div>

<br>
As far as comfort foods go, Toad In The Hole was always up there for me. Even as a veggie it was my go to meal using Quorn Apple Sausages, a really easy to put together and relatively quick dinner.<br>
<br>
Way back when it was one of the first recipes I published online and it got a ridiculous amount of views and comments. People who had tried but failed previously saying just how simple I'd made it. It <i>was </i>totally simplistic and so long as you had an oven that reached temperature as it should *looks to kitchen with a stench face* it was infallible.<br>
<br>
8 years of being gluten free and I have never, ever even come close to replicating that gorgeous puffed up batter of my gluten filled triumph. Not remotely.<br>

Well hello again :)<br>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
In keeping with my current form I thought I'd share another lazy meal idea, the Pastry Pizza, ta da!</div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
I'm a huge fan of puff pastry, (bit of a weakness actually) and so when we discovered that Jus Rol had brought out a conveniently pre-rolled sheet we had to immediately try it. Cue however long later and I swear that I think I've eaten at least 50 of these things since. I can safely say that I highly recommend.</div>

I'm just going to have to come out and admit it; I've become incredibly lazy. If you follow me on Twitter you may have seen #waffledrawer yesterday, well... this is more of the same. Frozen gluten free convenience food in my freezer. A sentence I never thought I'd write when I started FFG.<br>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
Not because I'm Miss 'fresh and healthy is the only way' - actually make that Mrs now (!), still getting used to that - but because I never thought this level of convenience would ever be available to me as a coeliac.</div>

That's my lap right there. 150 meters of tulle, a lot of velvet and a whimsical homemade bouquet inspired by fairy tales and maypoles. I couldn't have been more <i>me</i>.<br>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
It's not been the best few years to say the least. I lost my beloved Persian girl who was my friend, familiar and family in late '14, then my gorgeous Mum in early '15. 'Twas a nightmare of epic proportions which I know I'll never fully recover from but I'm finally on the mend.</div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
So that's why I haven't been around. Nothing fun or silly or interesting to say, just doom and gloom which I never want to put out there. So that's where I've been, the good days are now outnumbering the bad and so I feel like I can put my words out again. The light over dark is finally winning. I endeavour for silly season to come back permanently.</div>

Everyone who was a fan of DS Gluten Free will no doubt be very aware of the name change to Schar, it's just taken me forever to get around to writing what I think of both the goodies they sent me and the various supermarket visits - not just in London! - to find them.<br>

I'm just going to pretend that there hasn't been a gap of nearly 8 months between posts if that's okay. I'd rather not think about why I've been absent and tell you about something lovely instead. Cool?<br>
<br>
So a few weeks ago The Glutenite and myself were down the butter aisle in Tesco trying to find where they'd put our usual purchase of Crisp n Dry blocks. They were nowhere to be seen. However, pretty close to where the cooking oil should have been was an interesting but unfamiliar looking box. So I picked it up.<br>
<br>
And started a bit of an addiction.<br>

It might seem a bit odd, but these Halloween Brownies started out being developed as Halloween Ghost Meringues. How? You might ask.<br>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
Well. It all started fine, I separated the first egg by transferring the yolk from shell to shell and letting the white drip into my bowl. As I broke the next one The Persian let out an almighty MWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (for the Pumpkin cooking) and I - in a startled fashion - dropped the entire egg (including the 2 halves of shell) into the white I had just separated.</div>

First off, I missed the 4th birthday of Free From G, it was funnily enough, on the 4th. So a belated Happy Birthday to my little blog, it's been fun.<br>
<br>
Every year I've wanted to do a series of posts for Halloween but I've just never got around to it. this year however! I've already got a few things to share but I want to make more, still, I've got the time so there's no reason not to (<a href="http://www.freefromg.com/2014/10/random-events.html">unexpected events</a> hopefully not occurring).<br>

The past few months have been especially trying, consisting of a series of annoying events that have pretty much knackered me out.<br>
<br>
Firstly there was the seemingly never ending heatwave. Now I know I'm in a minority here, but I hate hot weather. I hate being sweaty, feeling constantly dirty and as though I'm basically being cooked, because that's how it felt.<br>
<br>
I suffered wearing as little as I could so imagine our Persian girl with her long floofy coat on. It affected her really badly and she's not been right since. We've had a series of worrying episodes with her.<br>

We've been having this meal a lot because it's really easy to make - since I was bitten by the mystery bug I've not been feeling great so I haven't been spending my usual hours in the kitchen making food - it's also very, very yum. And Hot.<br>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
Me and Pho go back a bit, the first time that I had it was on a glorious day spent in my beloved Brighton. You can read about our spoon silliness <a href="http://www.freefromg.com/2011/07/pho-restaurant-review.html">here</a> if you want. The second time, well the second time I ordered Pho, it was a <a href="http://www.freefromg.com/2011/10/pho-restaurant-review-wardour-street.html">complete and utter disaster</a>.</div>

I've just bought myself a pot of pretty expensive moisturiser because my face was starting to look like a lizard's, all dry and patchy, and yuck. I sampled the cream, lizard face gone! But I only have one application left so needs must.<br>
<br>
It really is a necessity not to have a face like a reptile as I haven't mentioned it here but there are weddingy things being spoken of. If you've been with me from waaaaay back you might remember there were weddingy things being spoke of quite some time ago, but nothing came of it. Well, <i>someone</i> stopped being a nincompoop and now we're <strike>serious<strike></strike></strike> talking about it again.<br>

And that everything you learn, is from their imparted knowledge? Well mine did a great job, especially my Mum. I was reading well before I ever set foot on school concrete, my maths were very advanced and I was generally quite bright thanks to lots of time spent educating little me.<br>
<br>
The thing is - and I'm only now realising just how much - my parents kind of had/have their own 'language', which I of course grew up with thinking it was completely normal. Why wouldn't I?<br>

<br>
Hopefully not from one of these f%&£ing things:<br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc4c54Ho26B9KQmdf9OtMNihujuURy6K6_kZfW86mgOFlj1xMKN_FzFRIdn740RCbj5NqZM7FMGEou0JeIEqBML1rwIgSmASiEpc3mtTrOLuaAnZitGqIhb6hW5sY9H80bf0WNdOetysc/s1600/Daily_Star_18_9_2014.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="killer mosquitoes uk" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc4c54Ho26B9KQmdf9OtMNihujuURy6K6_kZfW86mgOFlj1xMKN_FzFRIdn740RCbj5NqZM7FMGEou0JeIEqBML1rwIgSmASiEpc3mtTrOLuaAnZitGqIhb6hW5sY9H80bf0WNdOetysc/s1600/Daily_Star_18_9_2014.jpg" title=""></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I know it's The Star and that means most of their front pages - and general content - are just made up rubbish but I've spent the last nine days feeling absolutely dreadful with a bite on my wrist that resembled - what can only be described as - a large unwell nipple.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Seeing this front page today makes me a) want to buy something like bee keeping get up to wear out b) makes me want to remain indoors, indefinitely.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
