Gluten Free Halloween Brownies

gluten free halloween brownies
Clutter Of Spiders (Thankfully Plastic)
It might seem a bit odd, but these Halloween Brownies started out being developed as Halloween Ghost Meringues. How? You might ask.

Well. It all started fine, I separated the first egg by transferring the yolk from shell to shell and letting the white drip into my bowl. As I broke the next one The Persian let out an almighty MWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (for the Pumpkin cooking) and I - in a startled fashion - dropped the entire egg (including the 2 halves of shell) into the white I had just separated.

Pixie's Halloween Pumpkin Soup - Gluten Free

shot glass pumpkin soup
Soup!
First off, I missed the 4th birthday of Free From G, it was funnily enough, on the 4th. So a belated Happy Birthday to my little blog, it's been fun.

Every year I've wanted to do a series of posts for Halloween but I've just never got around to it. this year however! I've already got a few things to share but I want to make more, still, I've got the time so there's no reason not to (unexpected events hopefully not occurring).

Random Events

It's been a strange year so far, one that I'm looking forward to seeing the back of. The past few months have been especially trying, consisting of a series of annoying events that have pretty much knackered me out.

Firstly there was the seemingly never ending heatwave. Now I know I'm in a minority here, but I hate hot weather. I hate being sweaty, feeling constantly dirty and as though I'm basically being cooked, because that's how it felt.

I suffered wearing as little as I could so imagine our Persian girl with her long floofy coat on. It affected her really badly and she's not been right since. We've had a series of worrying episodes with her.

Gluten Free Pho

gluten free pho
Prawn Pho
We've been having this meal a lot because it's really easy to make - since I was bitten by the mystery bug I've not been feeling great so I haven't been spending my usual hours in the kitchen making food - it's also very, very yum. And Hot.

Me and Pho go back a bit, the first time that I had it was on a glorious day spent in my beloved Brighton. You can read about our spoon silliness here if you want. The second time, well the second time I ordered Pho, it was a complete and utter disaster.

The Pot Of Face Cream And The Wedding

Hello. I've just bought myself a pot of pretty expensive moisturiser because my face was starting to look like a lizard's, all dry and patchy, and yuck. I sampled the cream, lizard face gone! But I only have one application left so needs must.

It really is a necessity not to have a face like a reptile as I haven't mentioned it here but there are weddingy things being spoken of. If you've been with me from waaaaay back you might remember there were weddingy things being spoke of quite some time ago, but nothing came of it. Well, someone stopped being a nincompoop and now we're serious talking about it again.

The Mystery Of Free From G

You know how when you're little, your parents are pretty much your world? And that everything you learn, is from their imparted knowledge? Well mine did a great job, especially my Mum. I was reading well before I ever set foot on school concrete, my maths were very advanced and I was generally quite bright thanks to lots of time spent educating little me.

The thing is - and I'm only now realising just how much - my parents kind of had/have their own 'language', which I of course grew up with thinking it was completely normal. Why wouldn't I?

Allergy #1: Bug Bites And Stings

I think it's been 9 days since the insect bite; definitely not a sting, just one sting and I swell up, this was definitely a bite, but from what?

Hopefully not from one of these f%&£ing things:

killer mosquitoes uk

Now I know it's The Star and that means most of their front pages - and general content - are just made up rubbish but I've spent the last nine days feeling absolutely dreadful with a bite on my wrist that resembled - what can only be described as - a large unwell nipple.

Seeing this front page today makes me a) want to buy something like bee keeping get up to wear out b) makes me want to remain indoors, indefinitely.

Cadbury Gluten Free Update

So I emailed Cadbury to ask about the packaging change that a reader had informed me of.

Here's what they said:

"Thank you for your recent enquiry about Cadbury's gluten free products. As a caring company and one that realised the trust our consumers have in our products, as well as declaring on the wrapper products that contain gluten we feel it is correct to bring to everyones attention a product that might contain even the remotest traces. A number of products that do not contain gluten in their recipes are manufactured on the same production line as products that contain gluten. The machinery is flushed and cleaned throughout after gluten products are produced. Even though the risk of cross contamination is extremely small it is nevertheless a possibility we cannot ignore.

For those who are sensitive to gluten we provide a list of products that are made on dedicated gluten free production lines which can be found at www.cadbury.co.uk under the 'Products' section.
Any products that are not included on this list are not there because of the production and risk of contamination or because they do in fact contain gluten including our seasonal products."

My list is now up to date, you can find it here.

So all those products that are still on the list are made on dedicated production lines, which is really great to hear.

No more seasonal products but there's still plenty of safe options to choose from, yay!

(Allergic reaction to bug bite still visible, I'm not on top form)

Hasslacher's 100% Cacao: 100% Natural And Gluten Free

cacao
A New Favourite Thing
Well it's been a while. Sorry if you've missed my randomness, the beloved Persian girl has been unwell and I've been in a bit of a state because of it, that mixed with the unbearable heat we've had. Looks like she's on the mend thank heavens and aside of sporting a lovely insect bite on my wrist which I've had a typical allergic reaction to (incredibly itchy, unsightly lump exactly where a watch face would be) all is good.

I've been interested in Cacao since hearing of the supposed health benefits and so I took the opportunity to finally try some when I had a craving for hot chocolate. Oh this stuff is good.

Gluten Free Honey Vanilla Cheesecake

gluten free cheesecake
A Free From G Photo, As Per Usual, A Bit Odd
You're probably aware that this is a cake free zone usually, don't worry I've not gone all Great British Bake Off on you, I'm still crap when it comes to the science of such things. This Cheesecake though, well it's been a bit of a revelation.

See, I kind of assumed that all desserts (made from scratch) required a bit of cleverness. There's usually eggs involved and exact quantities needed, I can't be doing with such things for desserts. I do love a good Cheesecake though and had toyed with the idea of making one for a really long time. I couldn't be bothered with the - assumed - faff though.

Turns out you can make a bloody good Cheesecake with no cooking, no eggs and no exact - do it by the book or else you're f***ed - quantities! Yes, I know I'm late to the party here but I mean it's not a given knowing that, is it? Not for someone who taught themselves to cook.

Gluten Free Gazpacho

gluten free gazpacho
No Cooking!
More Tomatoes and another no cook recipe. This heatwave has brought about lighter meals and picky foods - something I'm definitely in favour of - so it's not been all bad. It mainly has though and my brain still isn't working properly because of it, so I'll do my best. How to concentrate on anything but slurping ice cold drinks in a heatwave?!

Monday 21 July 2014

Gluten Free Habanero Salsa

gluten free salsa
Odd Shot I Know
I'm going to try my best here - to share a lovely, simple Summer recipe with you that anyone can make - in a way that's readable because quite frankly, the heat here in London has done me in and my brain feels like a wobbly jelly inside my very sweaty head.

I'm suffering! I'm more cut out for Igloo life.

The Big Quesadilla... Mess

gluten free quesadilla
Big Quesadilla
We're big fans of the good ole Quesadilla. There was a time when we'd make our own Tortillas for them, the only downside apart from more effort was that they were always a bit on the small side. In recent weeks we've discovered BFree, a brilliant gluten free brand from Ireland who make an amazing loaf (which I shall review next week if I can get my hands on one again) and lovely sized wraps that we used here in place of Tortillas.

They make other stuff too but I haven't tried any of it yet.

The Very Reason I Started Free From G

I get a lot of emails from parents who have coeliac children, sometimes they want advice - which I of course happily give to the best of my ability - but mostly it's a simple thank you. The following message made me so happy and I wanted to share it because this is the reason Free From G exists:

"Finally I have found a gluten free blog written by a normal person. My daughter age 12 has coeliacs and not so fussed on vegan, organic macro (weird) food. Most sites I have visited seem to throw the baby out with the bathwater ie if it's not free-range sustainable chicken it's bad for you. (I am exaggerating a little) Anyway, She just wants tasty food that is gluten free. Luckily we love to cook and she is happy to give new things a try. So thank you for your informative blog."

If you haven't read the about me page (why the devil not?!) you probably don't know why I started writing this mismash of words. It was quite simply because I needed information, I needed to know what I could actually eat and it seemed like a great idea to write down my findings so I had something to refer to. It became obvious that it was worth sharing because I couldn't find the content I wanted anywhere else online and maybe that was the same for others too.

So to have that email from a parent and know that I've made a bit of a difference to someone, especially a child, that means the world to me.

Silliness will resume in the coming days...

Gluten Free Smoked Chicken Risotto

gluten free risotto
Would Have Looked Better In A Plain Bowl I Know
So, I made it and it turned out lovely. I was quietly confident on Friday but what with it being so bloody hot here I didn't know if I'd be capable of standing at the hob and stirring for how ever long it was going to take. I managed it, albeit through gritted teeth and I think I may have lost a few pounds in the process so it all worked out really.

Talking of the heat, I'm a hot mess and I don't mean in the good way. I'm just hot and messy, I hate this weather IT IS SO VILE. And Wimbledon has finished so I'm a bit bereft.

Friday 4 July 2014

Friday Fings

You can sort of blame Andy Murray or Grigor Dimitrov for this post. It's the latter for me as he put paid to me having a massive Wimbledon Pimm's hangover this year, not something I necessarily wanted to endure but it would have meant that Andy had won and I'll take a bad hangover for his team any day.

That's why the recipe I told you I would share hasn't been posted, I was a bit glum (and I don't like to write FFG posts when I'm anything but a bit silly). That and the fact that when I reviewed the photos I took I couldn't exactly use any of them, I know my lackadaisical approach to photography isn't ever going to result in any show stoppers but this was bad even for me.

Gluten Free Strawberry Cheesecake Toast

strawberry cheesecake toast
Wimbledoney
Isn't it pretty? I think so, and I'm loving the plate, it's picnicware but I'm of course using it indoors. I've got a thing about picnic stuff, I just find it cute for some - only my brain knows why - reason. Maybe because it's more tactile than regular crockery, lighter, more girly? I don't know.

So this is a really quick little Summery snack using the amazing DS Gluten Free Brioche, it's ridiculously simple but so tasty that I had to share it with you.

Tuesday 24 June 2014

A Tudor Lovefest

I'm not a great fan of the word 'idol' - its meaning in the manner I intend it yes, it has a lovely definition - I just find it too, well far too close to 'idle'.....

I could go into much detail about this as I'm in a worky wordy mood but no one really expects serious of me on here, right? Especially when it isn't about food.

The reason I brought up the word 'idol' was because I was trying to think of a word to correctly describe someone, (wow, this is so going read like I've lost the plot). Someone who unless you're a bit... sadistic? Wouldn't really be referred to as an idol. Nor are they actually real (sort of).

If you've never visited now's probably the time for me to say Welcome To My Bloody Strange World.

Three Nation Pancakes - Gluten Free

gluten free pancakes strawberries clotted cream
Three Nation Pancakes
A couple of hours ago I ate that, and others, and so I feel immensely full and uncomfortable and I have no idea how I'm going to write this without warning you off of them.

I've been making these Pancakes for ages but I've never had the patience to document the ingredients to share as a recipe, I mix by eye usually going by the batter consistency. Today I broke the ingredients down and hopefully now I can finally post this I can also let this be a red flag with flashing neon lights warning to myself that if I keep on eating these Pancakes I am going to end up SO FAT. I've made, I've shared with you good people and now I must stop myself from this vice before I finish up looking like Mr Blobby's sister.

I'm Not Sorry...

I know it's fake but you know what? It's made me laugh so much.

Here's a thought:

Hawaiian Style Smoked Cheesy Chicken Bacon Bites

hawaiian style bites
Prior To Smoking
A recipe! It's been a while huh? With the addition of Pineapple these are a new improved version of the original Bacon Bites that The Glutenite created way back when. A Hawaiian version.

This is a recipe that requires a smoker but you can alternatively grill or barbecue them, I haven't done that myself as I highly recommend smoking for the amazing flavours but I'm sure they would still be lovely.

(I've gone with that photo as the lead despite it being of the raw bites because the photos of the smoked versions just don't cut it. You'll have to take my word for it because my photos do no justice to this recipe whatsoever but I can assure you that these are incredibly delish and smoked Pineapple is indeed a sexy revelation.)

Tuesday 17 June 2014

Amaizin Chilli Corn Rolls

amaizin corn rolls
Made In Belgium, A Bit Like Me Ancestrally
Still no sign of the long overdue recipe (tomorrow for sure, almost certainly for sure) but I've got a great new discovery if you're a fan of crisps and who isn't a fan of good snackettes, right?

So I shared my Tesco surprise with you the other day and this is one of the new items from that aisle that I thought I'd give a go. Hell yeahs, a great product it turns out and naturally gluten free.

Friday 13 June 2014

DS Gluten Free Brioche Loaf And More

There was supposed to be a recipe post going out today (I know! Been a bloody age) but it'll have to wait until next week because I do like to add a bit of humour to my recipes and quite frankly I'm feeling anything but humorous today. I figure a product review will do just fine, it's a good one. I can do positive, just not funny (funny haha, not funny odd, I'm always funny odd).

Life Is Short

Rik Mayall is the second person whom I was a great admirer of to pass away at at a young age recently and it's so incredibly sad. But in keeping with the tone of this blog, of me, let's laugh. I think it would be disrespectful not to.

Thursday 5 June 2014

Waikiki - London

I think I've mentioned that there's a shop located within our apartment complex, it's useful to have and a decent size for essentials (think a small Tesco Metro). I hadn't been in there for a while until today and I got a bit of a surprise.

As you walk in there's a decent amount of shelf space on the right where there had been an enticing amount of American foods. I never bothered to inspect any of the labels because the very nature of the products meant that it was highly unlikely they would be suitable.

I don't get annoyed about things I can't have, I never have done, what's the bloody point? It's just a case of I'm gluten free and that's that. However, I've always been a bit (I don't want to use the word obsessed here).... into all things American and having grown up watching a lot of shows and films from there I had a decent knowledge of American junk food that I was desperate to try. I was a gluten eating teenager.

The Wheels On The Bus Go Round And Round (Not Fast Enough)

I'm having a really miserable day so I thought I'd go into my rare storytelling mode, it's nothing to do with food, just me, but it always makes me smile / cringe a little. I'll take either.

As you may or may not know, in (what seems like) a past life I used to work in music. I was a fan of all sorts of genres and me having control of the office stereo was not something that some thought 'appropriate'. Read as: I didn't play the 'cool' stuff.

Sinusitis, The Goblin King And My Kind Of Funny

covonia catarrh relief
Wonky, Like Me
If you're a regular reader and not someone who landed here because you searched for "is covonia catarrh relief gluten free" - If you did, it is, Hi! - you probably know that I've had my fair share of sinus problems over the years, though mainly when I was a teenager.

The problem flared up again a few years ago when I was concerned that I had another alien inside my face but overall my sinuses haven't been too much of an issue. That was until about a month or so back.

You Know You're Obsessed With Food...

*Whispers*

When you find out that a song you've known for 6 or 7 years doesn't actually have the lyric "I can be the toaster for the compote in your mind".

I know that makes no sense but.... well, it would be possible in this instance and so I had no reason to question the oddness. But It's nothing to do with food at all.

(In case you're wondering what a compote is it's a French dessert consisting of fruit in a sugar syrup)

If there is an actual song with the lyric 'compote' I might explode.

I Find This Interesting

This article on Buzzfeed talks about gluten and FODMAP's.

Although I've been gluten free since 2009 only this year have I conquered some remaining problems that were lurking. Thanks to a very helpful comment on here I investigated FODMAP's and found allergies that I didn't know I had by doing a series of elimination diets. Bingo! Those were the remaining issues.

If you're still having reactions to things whilst being on a strict gluten free diet, that's the stuff you need to look into because I had no idea that foods like onions and avocados were seriously messing with my system. They were, big time.

Investigate!

You're welcome :)

Gluten Free At Lidl

lidl gluten free food
Lidl Love
I've been meaning to write about this for a while but I wasn't sure that I actually wanted to share my findings, one does hope there aren't many coeliacs around these parts, I'm not fighting for food.

If you're gluten free and you haven't already done so, go take a trip to a Lidl. There, I said it.

Sweet Cheesecake And More

I do hope you aren't expecting a recipe from this post because if you are.. a) you're going to be disappointed and b) it's likely that by the end of this you'll think that I'm slightly nuts. More so than usual.

Chicken Legs And Fridges

I know, I've not been around again. I'm still to make it back out of the bad blogger hole. When I'm wonderfully rich I shall sit around watching tennis (which I have to admit I'm currently doing anyway) and write about food all day long. A girl can dream.

For now, here's one of the things that happened this weekend, The Glutenite did it.

Monday 28 April 2014

The Big Cheese Making Kit - Our Homemade Mozzarella

homemade mozzarella
Absolutely Delicious
I have a thing when buying presents for those close to me, I usually buy them something I'd like. If I think it's cool then I hope that my taste means that they will.

This was one of The Glutenite's Christmas pressies because at the time we couldn't get Pizza Mozzarella anywhere - you know, the hard stuff in a block that doesn't have any whey - and he loves the stuff. Plus I thought that making our own cheese seemed like a pretty fun and rewarding thing to do.

Wednesday 23 April 2014

Want Cakey

I'm terrible at making desserts, I've said that many times before but every now and then I think I could do it. I was in one of these moods yesterday, late afternoon, I had baking buoyancy. Usually the feeling passes without me actually attempting anything though.

I think it's nice to have a little something after dinner, I'm still trying to be 'good' and lose a little more weight that I gained starting last Summer when I had a mania for Paprika Sausages, but I felt like a bit of a treat was in order regardless.

We're a bit short on eggs due to me not doing the shopping list properly last week (so excited to have The Glutenite back home) and I'm very fussy about eggs (note: most things) so we'd have to go to a supermarket in order to get more of the kind we like. There's no supermarket in comfortable walking distance and besides, I hate shopping. Food shopping once a week is just about bearable.

So I decided that whatever I was going to make would be eggless.

Stovetop Whisky Soaked Oak Smoked Chicken

hot smoked chicken
Whiskey Soaked Oak Smoked Chicken
Yay! For the four day Easter holiday, boooo for it going so fast. Hooray for the wonderful food eaten though, for after a few weeks of no cooking I was back in the kitchen and ready to create all sorts of yum.

We hot smoke a lot of food here, our Cameron's smoker has seen a lot of use. We'd never smoked a whole chicken though so we set about rectifying that this weekend, couldn't be easier and it created the base of several meals throughout the long weekend.

Monday 14 April 2014

Where You Been?

Sorry it's been so long, it's been a bit of a stressful time. I'm feeling much better now but over the past few months or so I've been having health issues - girl problems - which I'm sure you don't want to hear about and I really don't want to share. It's been an emotional and uncomfortable stretch.

As I say, I'm feeling better now and on a very big plus side I've lost half a stone, not because of the health issues but because The Glutenite has been away and I vowed to step out of the kitchen and take a break. I haven't cooked (unless you call dry frying Halloumi cooking) for almost 3 weeks now.

I plan on getting back in there and experimenting a lot in the coming weeks so hopefully a lot of new recipes will be good to go on the blog soon.

In case you're wondering what I've been eating as I haven't been cooking; lots and lots of DS Gluten Free Crispbreads with a variety of lovely toppings and for a sweet treat Nairn's Biscuit Breaks in Chocolate Chip flavour. All so yum and hey, I've lost half a stone without even trying!

Gluten Free Eating Out? Easy According To Buzzfeed!

I try not to get too wound up about anything these days, try being the operative word here. I love Buzzfeed but this has just really annoyed me. There's not one mention of cross contamination, it's very, very bad information for anyone who is new to the gluten free diet and / or not clued up.

It's not that flipping easy, I know because I've tried.

As for their Pho suggestion, have a read of what happened to me when I ordered Pho here in London.

Bad Buzzfeed.

Olfactory System Overload

So, last night, The Glutenite comes out of the bathroom and says "there's a really weird smell in there" - Apartment living, our air vents are all connected. Lovely - "It smells like burning (worrying) or fish (yuck)". I thought back to years ago in another apartment we lived in where the waft of a neighbour's fish curry smell lingered for hours, I figured it would be of a similar stench.

Off the sofa I got and before I even reached the bathroom door it hit me - a pong so putrid that I immediately had to retreat. Was it burning or fish? It was Both. Burnt - no doubt blackened - fish skin funk, quite possibly the worst thing I have ever had the displeasure to experience in my nasal passages (well other than the alien)

And I've eaten stinky Surstromming.

The Quest For Gluten Free Bread And Pizza Plus Dessert Made By Yours Truly

Do you remember how simple food shopping was before being gluten free? I vaguely do but it must have been a whole lot easier. We've changed supermarkets, gone from a huge hypermarket type place to a relatively small store, needless to say the free from section is a bit crap.

Why change? Oh wow, that could be a post in itself; I'll just say that that supermarket is where weird (not the good kind) meets creepy. Big time. Plus it was miles out of the way whereby the one we're shopping at now is just down the road.

Still rubbish free from selection though.

Wrigley's UK Gluten Free / Allergen List

More information discovered thanks to a pouch of Skittles Sours that The Glutenite is rather fond of (me too on occasion but just the purple and pink ones). I had no idea who made Skittles but a quick scan of the pack showed it was Wrigley's, the gum people. Turns out they also make the medicinal Lockets and Tunes.

Here's the gluten free / allergen list:

Gluten Free Spicy Smoked Pork Ribs

spicy smoked pork ribs
Just Smoked
It's been a while since I shared a new recipe because I haven't been experimenting, I've been all achy and tired most of the time recently so being in the kitchen hasn't been something to look forward to like usual.

We did a re-run of these ribs though and with a longer smoking time they came out a-mazing, I knew they would so I documented the entire process to share.

Sorry if you don't have a smoker, these would still be lovely if put them in the oven for a few hours, not as good but still good. The chipotle lends a smokiness so there would still be a touch of that in there.

Toblerone Gluten Free List UK

I'm always in search of gluten free goodies to share with you and this is an unexpected one for me, good old Toblerone.

Directly from their website:
"Does Toblerone contain Gluten? No. All Toblerone flavours do not contain any gluten ingredients."
No mention of any factory cross contamination issues but if they just make Toblerone products and none of them contain gluten, well yay! Just be aware that these products aren't labelled 'gluten free' though.

By providing these lists I'm not to be blamed for any overindulgence, okay? :)

The Truth About Baby Carrots

Call me stupid but I seriously thought that Baby Carrots were a 'kind' of Carrot, a mini cute version that tastes way better.

WTF?!

I don't like the taste of 'big' Carrots but it turns out they're the same flipping thing.

I feel naive *Slinks away quietly*

Weekend Eats And Haribo Laughs

And so another working week has begun, it's too boring I need more weekend fun. I didn't intend that to rhyme but it seems kind of fitting for a post that's not really about anything but the random things that speed around my brain.

I have to share this, you may have seen it but watch it again, smile, laugh, it gets me every time.

Gluten Free Out And About

I'm not doing a great job updating am I? It's been over a week again and yet it feels as though my last post was yesterday. I wish it didn't feel that recent as so too are the memories of.... You know, I still can't bring myself to think about it too much as I can feel my gag reflex limbering up (seriously). Go back to the last post if you don't know what I'm on about.

Nothing much to report of in my gluten free world, certainly nothing exciting. I feel dreadful, not gluten related but due to my own lackadaisical attitude to vitamin and mineral intake. I've been silly. This has resulted in a growing dislike for cooking because I just can't be bothered, I'm sluggish, tired and pretty much washed out, so there's been a lot of The Glutenite's Toasted Cheese Sandwich making going on.

If you're sick of cooking, can't cook or just fancy treating yourself to a nice gluten free meal out I have just the thing for you!

Oh Dear Warburtons. Oh Dear.

Well. After an unsuccessful shopping trip on Saturday we went out this morning for things we couldn't get at our usual Tesco. We got the water (even The Persian drinks the bottled stuff as the hard water here is vile, (corroded cat concerns)) and the wine (another essential) but the DS Gluten Free bread was nowhere to be found.

We did what now seems unthinkable. We chanced another brand.

Not That I'd Want To Be Out In This Storm....

valentine haribo
Might Skip Dinner
On this disgustingly stormy Valentine's Day I'd like to say that love is in the air but actually it's just cloud, rain and gusty wind. Still, I have my Valentine Haribo that The Glutenite bought for me (after I put it in the trolley), I'm a sucker for anything heart shaped and I do love my Haribo.

Gluten Free Club Sandwich

gluten free club sandwich
The Free From G Chicken Club
We had this down as a meal for last week but we used up all the bread before it could be made. 3 loaves this week and we're already out again, it's just so good. I wish you could see the actual beauty of this sandwich but as we reasoned last night, we just don't have the space to take great photographs. I'd love a dedicated area to do so, to get really creative, but were you to see the size of our kitchen and the amount of equipment it contains (a lot) you would be quite impressed that I manage to create recipes at all in that space.

One day I'll have a kitchen suitable for preparing feasts to be photographed, until then you'll have to put up with my shoddy snaps in my little kitchen more suited to microwaving ready meals (I still love it though).

Talk about confusing. So I did the carrot test last week, I cooked the carrots in the gravy but I didn't eat any. Still had a reaction. So yesterday I cooked the carrots in a separate pan and just had the Boiled Bacon (with shallots instead of onions) and gravy. Big reaction.

Aside of the meat and shallots the only other ingredient (minus the carrots this time) are 2 Stock Pots and I know it isn't them because I use them all the time and this is the one remaining meal giving me problems since removing other things from my diet.

So what is it?

DS Gluten Free Seeded Sliced Loaf Review

Gluten free bread is something that I gave up on a very long time ago. The last disappointment was when I was taken by a strong craving for a Toasted Sandwich, the sliced bread didn't even survive the car trip home let alone being buttered, filled and turned in the pan.

I'd given up on bread but it wasn't all bad, I always have a pack of DS Gluten Free Ciabattas to hand, I've been using them to make all sorts of lovely things* for years, and more recently I've been loving their White Rolls (always thought of by the superior name of Breadlingtons by me), in which hot or cold fillings work a treat.

I wasn't missing bread but a Toasted Sandwich was often day dreamed about.

Jack Daniel's Sauces - Gluten Free Options

I'm still waiting for the product mentioned yesterday to review, so in the meantime I thought I'd share my thoughts on the gluten free Jack Daniel's Sauces available.

I've been using the Hot Pepper Steak Sauce a lot recently, not on Steak, I don't eat red meat, but on both Chicken and Pork and it works incredibly well. I use it as a cooking sauce rather than a table sauce.

Carrot Or Cannot

Thought that I would be doing a product review this post but alas, the (wonderfully exciting to me) product hasn't arrived yet but I still feel the urge to write something.

It's days like these when I feel that I shouldn't connect digitally with anyone at all. I'm aghast to think that a slightly less than upbeat post might be the first thing someone reads from me, that it might come across that I may always be on a bit of a downer. If you've read my writings before you'll know that isn't the case, I'm usually quite silly, but today, today I feel like someone has poured a vat of glue over my head and thrown me into a pool of prickly ended feathers.

I realise that's actually quite a funny scenario which gives me hope that even today, a day which is just full of nothingness, a negative if you will - nothing awful, nothing great - I have an underlying humour that won't be quashed.

Salmon Waffles

I'm a funny one when it comes to Salmon (yes, ok, maybe in many other areas too), I still love Smoked Salmon despite it being one of the very few things I would eat as a child - many, many pounds of it therefore consumed - I also love Salmon Sashimi, but it has to be the full works of Tamari Soy Sauce and Wasabi with it. Tinned Salmon, that I love also but fresh cooked Salmon, eurgh, I can't stand the stuff, I don't like the texture nor the taste.

I also don't like wild Salmon in any form. I remember getting a work gift years ago, it was hamper from Fortum and Mason, I don't recall any of the contents except for a pack of wild Smoked Salmon. I had always been used to top quality Smoked Salmon because my Dad used to get it from a wholesaler who supplied Harrods, but I was still excited at the prospect of trying wild Salmon.

I found it vile.

So here I present delicious Salmon Waffles made from your everyday non wild tinned red Salmon in brine.

Updated Post Alert

I've updated my Haribo post with a warning, it isn't a gluten problem, it's a sugar free Haribo problem of epic proportions.

I found this buried amongst the hundreds of reviews:

"I suffer from an intolerance to gluten. I also suffer constant ribbing from others about my special dietary needs. Well... payback is a B*tch, you are all getting a bag of these for christmas... and with the gift wrap option from Amazon what could be better."
You may have guessed from those words that sugar free Haribo has very, very unpleasant after eating effects. I felt it my duty to warn.

Happy Thursday :)

The Fondue Incident

If you're familiar with my posts then you will know that I'm a really big fan of cheese, the stronger the better. It will come as no surprise then to know that Fondue is one of my favourite meals, though not eaten as regularly now as in the past.

When doing the weekly meal plan on Friday we decided to include Fondue, after doing the meal plan I always then do the shopping list. Both of these things are usually (stupidly) done between 10pm and midnight, sometimes later and always after a few glasses of wine and with one eye on the tv.

Happy New Year!

I'm looking at the Christmas tree as I type, I know that it must come day today (if sticking with tradition) but I feel sad at the thought of it not being there for another 11 months. This year we up scaled from a small - maybe 2 foot - black tree to a more traditional - though still quite small - 4 foot green one, it's decorated by me, in my typically random fashion with brightly coloured baubles and stars and metallic hearts. There's something about this particular tree and decorations that makes me feel extremely happy, it's my favourite Christmas tree to date. Fitting for it to have also been my favourite Christmas to date too.
